Time is running out to apply for 2011 JREF Educator Grants. If you are a teacher with a project that could use a little extra support, get your application in by July 1 to be eligible for this year's program.

The JREF awards grants to educators who are inspiring a new generation of critical thinkers. These grants help pay for developing and improving programs that teach critical thinking and scientific skepticism in the classroom and beyond.

Sorry, all you folks in the Fort Lauderdale area...  Tonight we'll not be holding the last-Wednesday-of-the-month Open House at the JREF.  We're looking into holding those meetings at the local public library, which hosted the first few such get-togethers when we first got started, but the job of emptying out the JREF office has been just too much for us, and though the building is pretty well empty now, we don't have much hospitality to offer you...

The Isaac Asimov Library is currently being moved to my home in Plantation, Florida, and we're working out a schedule whereby it will be available to visitors, of course.  It's all very complicated...!  I miss meeting you as freely as I did before, of course.  The new official headquarters of the JREF will be in Los Angeles now, and I was just there -- to attend Michael Shermer's highly successful conference at which Bill Nye and Mr. Deity appeared, among many other stars.  Bill and Mr. D. will also be appearing at TAM9, which I believe is about to stop taking applications due to a full house...

While in L.A., I was shown several venues being considered for the new JREF headquarters site, and if a certain one of those is chosen -- no hints, sorry! -- I'll be VERY pleased indeed!

And so, back to the fray.  My office is now set up and functioning, paperclips and a stapler are already busy, and I'm now a bit happier than working out of cartons, as I was for the past few weeks.

Brace yourself: I am going to talk about television again - briefly.

I grew up in the 70s and I watched a lot of crap on TV, but I am not going to claim that Donnie & Marie or The Gong Show were big influences in my life. No, this post begins with an intentional lesson I learned from – don't laugh – an ABC After School Special.

[Editor’s Note: As a precursor to The Amazing Meeting! 9, we have collected a series of stories from readers like you; people who have, through one means or another, discovered skepticism and critical thinking. These stories remind us that we all started somewhere and some of us are still finding our way as skeptics We have received so many submissions that we cannot fit them all in prior to TAM by posting them one at a time. If you are interested in contributing your own story, please submit your piece of around 1000 words to maria (at) randi.org along with a short 2-3 line bio

Today’s stories come from Michael and Mary]
