Issue 7: Ghost Hunting, Pt. 1 (Interview with James Randi)
“Yes, as a magician, I realized that I was in a unique position to be able to recognize how the so-called “psychics” were doing their tricks. When I became 60 years of age.... I decided that my time would be better spent investigating these matters and trying to inform people as to how they were being fooled.”

Witchcraft accusation of children (and also of elderly people) is ravaging the African continent like an epidemic. And Pentecostal pastors and ubiquitous men and women of God are the main culprits. They are spreading the disease of witch hunts and also exploiting the situation to their own advantage. These self-proclaimed emissaries of God and mouthpieces of the holy spirit are the continent's contemporary witch doctors. They exploit poor, ignorant, and gullible folks by getting them to believe that their problems are caused by witches and wizards in their families.

Dear Friends:
The year 2011 winds down, but our plans for 2012 are winding up, as you would expect. Your much-needed support of the James Randi Educational Foundation will help us to continue battling unreason in our society.
I’m writing today about your opportunity to help us reach our goal, and to tell you to that thanks to a very generous and long-time friend of the JREF, one who recognizes that we are uniquely positioned to respond to harmful claims made by peddlers of woo-woo in our society, all donations up to $150,000 through the end of the year will be matched – dollar-for-dollar!
Won't you help us fight the fakers and take advantage of this wonderful offer to double your gift?
But please note: we have only a few days left in this 2011 year-end campaign to raise the money we’ll need to fight the charlatans and enable people to defend themselves from paranormal and pseudoscientific frauds. I'm asking you to help us stand up for reason and continue battling for you and other skeptics and science-minded citizens in the coming year.
Folks, this means that we have a great opportunity — for a limited time, you have a chance to take your important support of our work to the next level, and make your gift go twice as far. Donate to the JREF today, and the impact of your support will be doubled — but only if you contribute before the end of the year.
Your contribution will enable us to:
- Expose paranormal and pseudoscientific frauds promoted in the media. Uniquely among organizations who oppose unreason, we challenge the Sylvia Brownes and the quacks with our $1 million dollar prize for anyone who can prove a paranormal ability under fair conditions.
- Support skeptical activists and the important grassroots consumer advocates who stand up for the public’s right to know the real facts.
- Create and inspire the investigative spirit in a new generation of critical thinkers, by providing grants and free teaching resources to educators, scholarships for students, and free resources for the classroom.
- And reach new audiences through digital publishing initiatives including podcasts, online video, ebooks and mobile apps.

Some of you may recall that this past April the anti-vaccine National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) ran an ad in New York City’s Times Square. The ad was made to basically do two things: 1) propagate falsehoods about vaccines, and 2) direct traffic to the NVIC website. One way in which the ad tries to mislead people is by playing on a “pro-choice” mentality concerning vaccines: the notion that they aren’t really necessary and the government/medical community is trying to make decisions for parents regarding their children’s health. It follows up encouraging parents to “get informed”: see for yourself.
