A correspondent recently wrote to tell me that the TV series "Lost" isn't as unrealistic as we might have thought. He says the subplot about the coincidences and "meanings" of the lottery numbers reflects something that has happened in reality.
He explained that "a series of numbers drawn in the NY lottery game, has been verified as a 'message' from another continuum, by senior researchers at Princeton University. This is a first scientific verification of that dimension of reality...."
When I asked for his evidence, he sent me this link to a webspawner page that references a story from the Bronx Times Reporter of July 8, 1993.

Residents of Kearney, Nebraska are getting a treat starting on April 30th . The ghost-hunting group Midwest Paranormal Investigators is teaching classes at Trails and Rails Museum. I remain unsure what, precisely, will be taught to the students of these 'classes,' which cost fifty dollars each - even after reading the Midwest Paranormal Investigators' Facebook post on the event. The event title is, quite possibly, the best part of hearing about this instructional travesty. The title is: "Ghost Hunting 101: Where History Meets the Past." I propose a possible future event: "Dihydrogen Monoxide 101: Where Water Meets the Pacific Ocean."

It must be a chilly evening in hell, because Sylvia Browne — notorious woo-slinger, famed “psychic,” and noted baritone — has become a skeptic.
In her new book, The Truth About Psychics, Browne not only finds common cause with Harry Houdini: She traces the whole history of spiritualism back to its origins, and gives you, the reader, the skills necessary to spot a phony fortune-teller and put the world’s seers “out of business.” Wow! Good going, Sylvia! We knew you had it in you.
Well, that’s a lie.

Those of you who don't blink will remember when, earlier in the year, we posted a video of Randi speaking at the 2007 TED Conference. We took the post down about 30 minutes later because, as it turned out, we had misunderstood TED's Fair Use policies. Sorry about that.
Well, here it is again — TED has finally, after three years, posted Randi's presentation on their website. It's well worth watching. Especially the bit where Randi ODs. I think it made the audience nervous. To see the vid, click on the image at right. (And to see or post comments, please click "Read More.")

(Editor's Note: What we have here is a quick note about The Amazing Meeting from one of the fellows who makes TAM such a wonderful time: The kindly, humble, and brilliant Steve Cuno. We publish this in the hopes that those of you waffling over whether or not to attend will read and be inspired to take the plunge. If you are a previous TAM attendee and have strong feelings and/or deep thoughts about the experience, please feel free to contribute your own note by writing here. Thanks. - BKT)
Dear Swift Reader:
When I attended my first TAM, I was a bit, er, skeptical.
I figured that two and a half days of presentations on science and critical thinking would either be fun ... or boring beyond belief.
On the off chance it would be fun, I signed up.
How did it turn out? Let me put it this way. I registered for this year's TAM the day it was announced. It will be my fourth consecutive TAM.
