It seems that hardly a day goes by without a new skeptical blog popping up out there. I guess this is a good thing, in that logoit demonstrates the continued growth of this movement, and it’s nice to see people taking on new projects. Unfortunately, these blogs either disappear or go fallow as fast as they appeared.  Even among those blogs that stand the test of time, few offer fresh perspectives. One new blog that has bucked that trend, and had some interesting things to say, is the Woo Fighters blog. The Woo Fighters are a student skeptical organization at California State University, Northridge, organizing at the grassroots level and working to promote skepticism and defend science through education and activism, as well as through the blog.

The blog features posts from the students, as well as the group’s faculty advisor, Barbara Drescher (ICBS Everywhere), whose name will be familiar to many here. Posts in the first few weeks discussed the road to becoming a self-identified skeptic, distinguishing between philosophical and scientific skepticism, public perceptions of science, and featured a particularly interesting piece on counterproductive divisiveness within the skeptical community. I also urge you to read Drescher’s account of where she drew the inspiration from that led to her worldview and projects like the Woo Fighters. Like many, her early understanding of rational skepticism was informed by the work of James Randi on The Tonight Show. I hope all of the Woo Fighters stay inspired and enjoy success in their new endeavor.
