Geller appeared on the Today Show this morning (October 24, 2007) to plug the Criss Angel show, in which Geller will be a guest host. The segment was headed, “GELLER’S LATEST TV TRICK” – which may not have pleased him, at all. Host Matt Lauer referred to Geller as a “mentalist” and a “mystifier,” but carefully avoided the one word that NBC has forbidden to be used in the “Phenomenon” show – “magician.”

Matt described tonight’s show as a search for the “next great illusionist or mentalist” – again avoiding the dreaded word, “magician.”

We see here a hint that Geller just may be trying to back out of his uniform declaration that he doesn’t do tricks, doesn’t know how to do tricks, and has never done tricks. He told Matt Lauer that he wants “to leave it a mystery.” Though there’s no longer much of a mystery, let’s see where it goes from here…

Geller also says that he’ll be “…actually conducting an interesting intuitive experiment with the people at home.” Really? Well, I’ll bet that he’ll do the same tired old routine in which people are asked to choose among the five ESP card symbols, or choose a playing-card – “But don’t choose the Ace of Spades” – in which case the King of Hearts will be favored… Or he may even reach out into the void and come up with the suggestive demo in which he asks the audience to draw two simple geometric shapes, “one inside the other,” then actually – subliminally – sketches out with his hands a triangle and a circle.

Oh, wait! This is going up on SWIFT at 1 p.m. today, so he’ll have to opt for some other trick! Tough! What will he do…?

As if to show that he still has the skill to do the same old trick, Geller ended up doing – you guessed it! – the bending spoon. What else? Lauer was less than impressed. He commented, “I think it’s a defective spoon!” and Geller just beamed…
